Early Detection Is Key to Protection
Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) is a viral illness that starts with flu-like symptoms and progresses to a distinctive rash. Being informed and vigilant about the signs can make a big difference in stopping the spread and getting timely care.
Early Signs to Look Out For (1–3 Days Before Rash Appears):
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
- Muscle and body aches
- Fatigue
- Swollen lymph nodes (a key symptom that differentiates Mpox from other illnesses)
Rash Appearance & Development:
- Looks like blisters or firm, raised lesions
- Slow progression — lesions may change in shape and size over time
- Usually more concentrated on the face, but can also appear on the palms of hands and soles of feet
How It Spreads:
Mpox spreads primarily through:
- Close skin-to-skin contact
- Respiratory droplets (especially during prolonged face-to-face interaction)
- Contact with contaminated objects or surfaces, like bedding or clothing
What You Should Do:
If you notice any of these symptoms — especially after possible exposure — contact your healthcare provider immediately. Early testing and isolation can help prevent further transmission.
